Question by Dan: Could there ever be a ‘Rage Virus’?
might be a stupid question but just saw a tv programme about zombies and as much as I know there will never be zombies I was wondering if there is a chance that there could be a rage virus as shown in 28 days later for example an airborne virus that gets into our system could that said virus make us go crazy and start killing everyone we see and never stop.

There are some diseases which induce behavior changes in their hosts. However, not all of them are viral in nature, some are infections of cellular organisms instead. One well-known example that IS a viral infection is rabies, which is typically contracted from animal bites. It is thought that many of the early legends about vampires may have stemmed from people with rabies. However, although dangerous, the disease is rather difficult to transmit, and modern medical technology is able to cure it quite effectively.

Anything’s possible, I suppose. I’ve heard of spelunkers (cave explorers) getting rabies virus from going into heavily bat-infested caves and breathing the virus in (airborne transmission), but that’s exceptionally rare. Also, rabies doesn’t actually make most of its victims act the way people seem to think they will. They’re usually too ill to do much at all, let alone rage/go on killing sprees.

Traumatic brain injuries to certain parts of the brain are more likely to cause the type of behavior you describe than any virus. Those are incredibly rare, though.

a contagion, could spread that affected the sanity of those infected… absolutely,

just a couple examples…the military experimenting with biological weapons and the cdc experimenting with new super virus’s…there are ways it could defiantly happen.

well technically rabies already is. some of the firsts signs of infection in humans and animals is unwarranted aggression. But you rather quickly get all hydrophobic and drop dead a little after that, once there’s signs of infection it’s already a death sentence. So no ragin’ out.
